The NEW Advanced IgE Inhalant Allergy Test
Now Includes Candida and Thimerosal!

The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc. now offers a more robust panel of inhalants tested for immunoglobulin E (IgE) reactivity!  The new, cutting edge technology maximizes the potential to identify an allergy with enhanced specificity and upper range capacity. The method used is still an Enzyme Linked Assay; however, the architecture, calibration, and performance of the new equipment is superior to that which is commonly used by other laboratories. The Advanced Panel of 69 inhalants, including Candida and Thimerosal, increases the chance that a patient may identify numerous offending environmental factors. Many insurance policies routinely cover charges for IgE inhalant allergy testing. To find out more about coverage, please contact your insurance company and provide them with the CPT codes listed at the bottom of this page.

General Description

Hypersensitivity, or allergy, refers to undesirable, damaging, and sometimes fatal reactions produced by the immune system.  When the immune system reacts to a factor in the environment, that factor is considered to be an antigen. Some people can tolerate a large degree of antigen without ever experiencing any outward symptoms while others may only require a very minute amount of antigen before symptoms are expressed. The degree and severity of symptoms vary because of the genetic makeup of the individual.  Allergic type reactions require a pre-sensitized immune state more likely to develop allergic reactions. A person who has a classic allergy usually develops redness, swelling, and heat in the body as a result of the elevated blood levels of Immunoglobulin E (IgE). Contrary to popular belief, the symptoms produced by IgE can be subtle and similar to those seen in other conditions. This potential confusion makes diagnostic testing very important in recognizing the disorder known as allergy.  When symptoms of allergy occur internally, the symptoms may be specific to the failing organ affected by the inflammation, such as the case with asthma.  Approximately 80% of children with asthma also have documented food allergies.  Other allergic conditions, such as nasal allergies or eczema, are often also present. Allergic asthma often goes into remission in early adulthood. However, in 75% of cases, the asthma reappears later.
