INTRODUCTION

 

The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc. presents A Comprehensive Biomedical Treatment Approach for Autism, PDD, & AD(H)D Conference on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the New Vision Autism Center in Temecula, CA.

 

Attendees will have an opportunity to hear from Julie Matthews, a nutritional expert and DAN! Practitioner; Dawn Winkelmann, a speech language pathologist and Certified Feeding Therapist; and Dr. Kurt Woeller, a DAN! Physician and director of an integrative medicine clinic.  All three speakers represent a unique insight to the treatments of autism, PDD, and AD(H)D from a biomedical approach.

 

 

 

SPEAKER BIOS

 

Kurt Woeller, DO, is the medical director for Stillpoint Center for Integrative Medicine www.mystillpoint.com in Temecula, CA. Dr. Woeller serves as a clinical consultant, teaching doctors the latest in biomedical diagnostic testing and treatment protocols for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).  He lectures nationwide regarding the benefits of biomedical therapies for autism, as well as maintaining an extensive educational resource for parents on his membership website at www.AutismActionPlan.org. Since 1998, Dr. Woeller has been a Biomedical Specialist using the Defeat Autism Now! approach. He was one of the first physicians in the United States to embrace the “Comprehensive Treatment Model” for the treatment of Autism and related disorders. This involves obtaining a full clinical picture of the individual’s health and underlying disorders including: nutritional deficiencies, food allergies, heavy metal toxins, enzyme dysfunction, inborn errors of metabolism, immune deficiencies and pathogenic micro-organisms in the gastrointestinal tract. Since seeing his first autism patient in 1998, Dr. Woeller has treated hundreds of children on the autism spectrum. Dr. Woeller is an osteopathic physician who specializes in traditional osteopathic medicine, cranial osteopathy and integrative medicine. He participates in a monthly educational webinar program that is sponsored by The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc., as well as supporting his own biomedical webinar service at www.AutismTreatmentWebinars.com.

   

Julie Matthews, is a leading US autism nutrition expert and Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) Practitioner specializing in autism diet and nutritional intervention. As an autism nutritionist specialist, she provides sound diet intervention and cooking guidance backed by scientific research and years of applied clinical experience. Julie consults one-on-one with families from around the world and routinely collaborates with physicians and researchers. She speaks at the leading autism conferences, writes for the Autism File magazine, teaches Cooking To Heal autism diet cooking classes, and hosts a weekly radio show in San Francisco. Julie’s comprehensive autism diet book, Nourishing Hope for Autism has been named the “Most Progressive Health Book” at the 2009 Independent Publisher Awards. Dawn Winkelmann, M.S, CCC-SLP, is a Speech Language Pathologist and Certified Feeding Therapist with over 13 years of experience evaluating and treating children with Swallowing and Feeding Disorders. She has started and maintained several inpatient and outpatient Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) Study Programs and has developed continuing education courses for other Speech Language Pathologists in the area of speech and swallowing. Dawn specializes in the medically fragile child as well as children on the autistic spectrum. Dawn has lectured in the United States as well as China and her therapy techniques have been highlighted on the Montel Williams Show and China Network Television. She is dedicated to the biomedical approach for treating autism as she playfully encourages children in her therapy sessions to consume an autism diet, drink supplements and swallow pills safely. Dawn is currently teaching a weekly video lecture series for parents regarding Feeding and Swallowing Disorders on Dr. Kurt Woeller’s website: AutismActionPlan.org. Dawn’s private practice, Spectrum Speech and Feeding is located in Arizona and she consults with clients all over the United States and in several different countries. Learn why proper diet and nutrition is essential for those with autism. Julie will present the scientific rationale for nutrition intervention and provide an overview of the respective therapeutic applications of the many ASD diet options including GFCF, SCD, Body Ecology, Feingold, low oxalate, and more. She’ll discuss the foundations of a healthy diet, making changes that work for the whole family, and tips for picky eaters.

“Feeding & Swallowing: A Medical Overview for Kids on the Spectrum”
Feeding and swallowing difficulties are common for children on the autistic spectrum. Ms. Winkelmann describes feeding disorders, the swallowing process, and the rationale behind our children’s refusal to eat. She provides some realistic medical solutions and recommendations for feeding our children.

“Cooking To Heal – The “How To” of Implementing an Autism Diet”
Julie will discuss the implementation of an “autism diet,” focusing on the GFCF diet and including common meal ideas and substitutions for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and others. You’ll learn time saving tips, get meal ideas, and receive kid-friend recipes for implementing the GFCF diet, as well as learn how to evolve the diet for experienced families.
