General Description

Copper is transported through the body by means of a protein called ceruloplasmin.  The availability of this protein in the body is used to predict the potential for toxic copper accumulated in the individual.  Copper that is not bound to ceruloplasmin for transport is considered more toxic than copper that is bound.  Up to six atoms of copper can be bound to each molecule of ceruloplasmin.  Low values of ceruloplasmin are found in Wilson’s disease, malnutrition, and Menkes kinky hair syndrome. High values of ceruloplasmin are found in pregnancy, infections, inflammation, tissue necrosis, trauma, and with estrogen or antiseizure drug use.
