C-Reactive Protein Test (hs-CRP)
General Description
High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), is an acute phase (stress) protein that indicates systematic inflammation in response to infection or injury.
In adults, an important marker in cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis, CRP elevation suggests a strong link between these conditions and bacterial or viral infection and is emerging as a good predictor of outcome.
In children, a study has documented elevated antibodies to Chlamydia in autism; high levels of C-reactive protein have been associated with exposure to Chlamydia pneumoniae. CRP shows promise as a useful marker of the inflammatory process in children and adults with autism.
