Asperger's Syndrome

“Asperger's syndrome (AS) is one of several Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) characterized by difficulties in social interaction and by restricted, stereotyped interests and activities. AS is distinguished from the other ASDs as having no general delay in language or cognitive development. Although not mentioned in standard diagnostic criteria, motor clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported.”

The symptoms and manifestations of Asperger’s syndrome are, by definition, milder than seen in full-blown autism. However, many of the same physical characteristics apply, but in a milder form. Individuals with Asperger’s may have intestinal microbial or fungal overgrowth, food allergies, and be affected by toxic metal exposure.

The metabolic, gastrointestinal, and immunological testing available from The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc. is useful for building an individualized treatment program of diet and supplements. Often, when physical symptoms are reduced, behavioral manifestations are also reduced, and the need for pharmaceutical intervention is also reduced.
